Founders Story:

In 2004 Barbara Blalock was working for the Valley of the Sun YMCA as their Senior Regional Preschool Director. Her position was primarily designed to accredit the 13 YMCA preschools through The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The challenge she faced was the fact that the preschools did not have the funds to purchase some of the needed items to meet the requirements of the NAEYC accreditation standards; items such as binders, desk trays, markers, staplers, tape dispensers and other expensive office supplies.

Barbara contacted Intel and asked if they had surplus office supplies that they would consider donating to the YMCA preschool programs. Intel generously began donating from their “Dump Your Junk” quarterly event. Barbara would gather these supplies, store them in her garage and go to each preschool and disperse the supplies.

It wasn’t long before other companies started donating. Motorola, The NFL and Goodrich jumped on board to donate their surplus supplies as they went paperless, downsized or closed offices.

November 19, 2016, Saturday.  The Rotary Park Clean-up will be Saturday, November 19th starting at 8:00am.  Rotary Park is located here: 2015 E Hermosa Dr, Tempe, AZ 85282.       Thank you to Randy Clawson for organizing with the City of Tempe who has agreed to be on site with all clean-up equipment we will need for the morning.

9/24/16, Saturday.   We are volunteering at 7:45 am at the United Food Bank warehouse at 358 E. Javelina Ave. in Mesa.  A variety of donated canned and packaged foods will be sorted and packed in boxes, and organized for distribution.  A fun teamwork event, where all your assistance goes to helping those in need.  RSVP to Lynn if you can attend.

12/06/14, morning: assisting with the Santa Claus Run toy drive with the AZ Rattlers, Ben Eubank from Rio Salado will be Santa Claus; Pat deHahn is also doing Santa Claus for a Kiwanis event nearby in the afternoon   (I have no location info right now on either of these, they should have it on the Facebook page)

12/14/14, all day with two shifts, begins at 9am: AASK Foundation event at the Ritz Carlton, volunteers needed to hand out toys, interact with kids, take photos, face painting etc.  There will be one volunteer dressed up as the Grinch.  At this point, there is a money contest going to see who is going to wear the costume.  Gary Johnson is the front runner at the moment with Judge Orr a close second.  No one else is really close in the contest!

12/20/14: 7am, Laird School project handing out food boxes.  School is near Scottsdale Rd between McKellips and Curry. I’m not sure of the entire time commitment.  Some jobs may require lifting, others won’t.

Snowball Express is a December event they would like to do but have no information on it yet.

01/31/15: Welcome to America project.  This is an organization that assists refugees from other countries settle into new housing in the Phoenix area.  It involves some lifting/moving of furniture and/or light household items.  Time commitment is usually 2 to 4 hours.
